Eco-industry: a fast-growing sector with roots in the Seine Axis

Wit over 1,500 entities based along the Seine, the economic sector built on recyclable and recoverable materials generates annual traffic of just under 6m tonnes. The sector is the second most important user of Paris area river and waterway transportation.

Most activities involving waste recycling and materials recovery are represented on the Seine Axis, most notably:

  • collection of waste following selective sorting,
  • treatment and disposal of hazardous waste,
  • recycling of construction waste
  • recovery of sorted waste.

River transport is particularly well suited to logistics for recoverable materials:

  • it is a mode of transport that is reliable and punctual,
  • it is environmentally friendly, accounting for no more than 1% of global CO2  emissions, compared with 51% for road transport,
  • it is protective of the human habitat: limited noise and visual pollution,
  • it has greater carrying capacity than the other modes: between 300 and 5,000 tonnes per voyage.
